Typical products of Alta Badia; handcraft and authentic flavours in the Dolomites
The numerous typical products of Alta Badia include handcrafts and gastronomy. The inhabitants of Ladin tradition have strongly preserved their technical skills, their usages and their methods for realising handcraft objects and culinary delights in one of the most fascinating holiday destinations in the Dolomites.
Artistic handcrafts play an important role in Val Badia. Just think of the different wood productions ranging from simple souvenirs to the wooden ornaments and decorations on the facade of the houses in Alta Badia. Just like carved wooden tables and seats, luxury hotels equipped with precious wooden furniture, and the famous wooden storage chest benches made in Alta Badia decorated and produced according to an unmistakable renaissance style.
In the past, the ornate wooden objects from Val Badia were mainly produce for amusement during the long months of isolation in winter. Only starting from the 18th century, did the inhabitants commence with the production of wooden objects as a possible income for an entire valley. Soon, the famous artistically woven fabrics of Val Badia became another income sector for Val Badia. They create ornate table clothes, towels and bed linen, which tourists increasingly buy as souvenirs to bring home.
Also of great importance amongst the typical products, are the dairy products produced in Val Badia, amongst which there are numerous types of cheese: herbal cheese, soft cheese, pepper cheese, butter, yoghurt and milk produced from the milk of local cattle. Finally, the unmistakable South Tyrolean bacon, which is always different with regard to aroma and fragrances and unique in its style, is of great importance for gastronomy in the Dolomites and often used in the gourmet cuisine of South Tyrol.
